读原著学英语(二十)

在The Modigliani Scandal这部小说中,作者刻画了伦敦一个不得志的青年画家Julian,他的画作卖不掉,画家当不下去,不得不改行开画廊。Julian向岳父借了两万英镑,但租金和装修就把钱用得精光,开业前的宣传推广和必要展品的筹集成了难题。无奈之下,他不得不硬着头皮开口向妻子借钱。当我在书中读到下面这段对话的时候,突然为之一震,原来我们常说的“豁出去了”,英文这样表达:

“You touch my father for twenty thousand, you live in the house he bought, you eat the food I buy, and then you come to me for money! I have just about enough to live on, and you want to take that away. Christ.” She looked away from him in disgust.(“你朝我爸借了两万英镑,你住在我爸买的房子里,吃着我买的食物,现在你又来朝我要钱!我这点钱刚刚够过日子,你又打起这点钱的主意。天啊!”说完,她鄙视地扭过头去,不再看他。)

But Julian had taken the plunge now—he had nothing to lose. “Look, you could sell something,” he pleaded. “Your car could raise enough for me to set the gallery up perfectly. You hardly ever use it. Or some of the jewelry you never wear.”(但朱利安豁出去了,反正他也没有什么可失去的。
